During my career, staff recruitment and retention was one of my key priorities.

Monthly feedback

I always felt that monthly one to ones with detailed feedback on both sides made a huge difference — structured training, monthly team meetings where all team members voices were heard and respected; alongside succession planning so that individuals could vocalise their career aspirations. This all helped to form a motivated and goal orientated team, who wouldn't jump ship at the first opportunity.

Understand each member of your team

Taking the time to understand the motivations of each of the individuals in the team is critical. Furthermore, playing people to their strengths, praising in public and rewarding great performance leads to a well-formed team with a shared vision of success.

Invest in team development

It can be difficult to find the time and the finance to invest in the development of your team, particularly if you are a small business. But believe me, it will come back to you ten-fold as it creates a supportive learning culture that staff members enjoy and are proud to be a part of.
