Starting any creative career can be daunting, especially if you do not have a following. For example, starting out as a self-employed writer with no followers, especially if you're unsure of what you're going to write about, can seem scary.
We have spoken to two self-employed experts, who have shared their advice on how to get a great start in your writing career.
Dominique Ogunlowo – Self-employed Chef, Food Blogger and Youtuber
I would say that you must keep up with great posts! Don’t be disheartened by starting with little to no followers, just post away! The right people will see what you’re posting and eventually followers will come. It helps to focus on other things rather than numbers, only post what you like and what you think people will enjoy seeing!
Kimberley Lewis – Founder & Owner of Life by Ms. Lewis
I would encourage new writers to be authentic and share content they would find interesting. Also, try to have your own style! People buy into personality, and if they read a genuine post, they are more likely to engage with you. And take good pics!
