I believe that it takes a great leader to build a great team - someone who is not afraid to change direction, someone who is disciplined enough to make the difficult decisions and implement standards and ensure that they are being met.

A high turnover rate in the industry has always been a problem, but maybe not always for the same reasons...

If you take care of your team they will take care of your business!!!

Your staff need development, they need engagement, they need to be listened to, they need to be motivated. We need to find the correct balance between mothering them and actually training and coaching them so they can learn and develop.

Encouraging staff to form bonds in and outside of work creates a team atmosphere and can assist with staff retention.

When I was fresh in managing high-paced and high volume kitchens, I was under the impression that it was imperative that I was to be hot-headed, loud, and to rule my domain with an "iron fist".

This is an issue that can only be addressed on an individual basis.

Staff turnover it is a headache indeed and the hospitality industry is definitely one of the worse affected by this problem.

Be a leader, not a boss! Nurture talent and develop individuals, but not too fast. A big problem in staff retention can be promoting too early, a great server will not necessarily make a great trainer, it's easy to make this mistake as you think you don't have time to go recruiting, you should always be on the lookout for new talent.

No shows are indeed annoying. They don’t usually happen in a team that is well jelled together: With the right teamwork spirit, your people wouldn’t want to let their colleagues down.
